MISSION STATEMENT

With God's help, our goal is to train, educate, encourage, and support the students that are deaf and hard of hearing, professionals working in the field of the deaf, and parents of children that are deaf of hard of hearing in Peru.  We hope to do this by sending teams consisting of student and adults that are deaf and hard of hearing, teachers of the deaf, interpreters, and parents of children that are deaf and hard of hearing. Our focus will change yearly depending upon the makeup of the team.

HISTORY

I met a young girl, that is deaf, high up in the Andes Mountains of Peru.  She was without any means of communication (outside of gestures) in 2002.

When I returned to the states, I researched how the deaf were educated in Peru.  To my surprise, most are educated in schools for the mentally retarded without the use of qualified teachers of the deaf that sign! Through the internet, I met Isabel Rey, the Director of the Programs for the Deaf through Scripture Union International in Lima, Peru. We have now developed a relationship and work to help improve the future for the children that are deaf in Peru.

In August 2006, the first team of 12 went to Lima.  This team was made up of youth and adults both deaf and hearing.  During our week mission trip, we toured schools, spoke to high school students about their future, shared with parents on how to encourage  the schools to educate their children, and we did a service project at a school.  The second team went in June 2007.  While in Lima for the 10 days, we shared bible stories in sign language at three different schools with classes for the deaf, took a group of children that are deaf on a field trip to a ruins just outside Lima, shared with parents, visited with at the deaf club, and offered a conference for those in Peru wanting to be an interpreter for the deaf. Our main goal on this mission trip was to bring down funds;  to purchase a printer so that sign language books can be printed and give money to purchase books for the children and the adults.

If this is something that you feel would like to do, please go to the applications session and send your information.  The next mission trip to Lima, Peru to work with the deaf will be June 28-July 7, 2008.
